I tried a TikTok food storage hack that helped me in a pinch – and saved me money

The weekend is made for curling up in front of a box set or movie and sharing some snacks with your family, but what do you do with your crisps if you don’t get through the whole share bag? Food clips are one way to secure the bag shut and ensure your crispy snacks don’t become soft and stale, but what if you don’t have any to hand?

Sure, you can roll the bag and pop them in the cupboard, but there’s a good chance the bag will unfurl over time and when you next reach for your favourite snack you could be greeted with stale crisps.

This is where TikTok comes to save the day, with countless food storage hacks on the app – one of which I put to the test myself. Home organising expert Ivonne (@organizingbyivonne) shared a handy hack with her TikTok audience demonstrating a savvy way to store open packets of crisps to stop them from going stale. The hack isn’t just for bags of crisps though and can work for cereal boxes too – no food clips required.

In her video, Ivonne shows a sped-up version of how to properly fold your crisp packet to keep the snacks safely sealed. She said: “No clips, no problem!”

For a bag of crisps, you first need to fold the packet over two times from the top. Then, fold the corners of the bag inwards and take a hold of the top fold. Flip over the top fold to secure the bag.

A similar technique can be done with cereal boxes, though you will want to fold the sides of the box inwards to create a triangle shape and then fold the top over to secure it.

Does the food storage hack work?

In the video, Ivonne seems to do the hack with ease, though we had to slow it down to get a better understanding of the exact steps involved in the process. I found it quite hard to figure out exactly what she was doing each step of the way.

The first step, folding the crisp packet over, is easy enough, but the hack does begin to get a little fiddly when you start trying to flip the packet and seal the crisps away.

It took me a few attempts to get it right, with the packet occasionally re-opening itself as it wasn’t secured properly. You need to ensure you get exerting properly tucked into place before the big flip.

Though I was a little sceptical, I turned the bag upside down and not a single crisp escaped. I even went back to check on it in the cupboard the next day and everything was still secure.

Considering it didn’t cost us a single thing, including the price of food clips, and also didn’t waste any leftover crisps meaning they were fresh to tuck into another day without having to buy any new bags, it was a relatively good storage option to help in a pinch.

With that said, a food clip is definitely an easier way to store your crisps, and the good news is that you can snap up some food storage clips on Amazon from as little as £3.99.
