‘I saved £500 on a flight thanks to my frugal money-saving methods’ | Travel News | Travel

A frugal man has shared how you can travel to your favourite holiday destinations, or visit somewhere new and exciting, but significantly cut your costs with a simple trick.

We are all too familiar with that craving for a getaway – be it from workplace woes, personal troubles, or simply being overwhelmed by an overflowing social schedule that leaves us drained. And with summer around the corner, many of us are planning trips abroad. Yet, amid soaring expenses and the steep cost of living, indulging in an extravagant retreat seems like a pipedream for most.

However, one frugal man has shared exactly how you can visit your dream destination, without burning a hole in your bank account. Bradley, better known online where he boasts one million followers as Bradley On A Budget on TikTok, managed to save £500 on a flight recently and has shared how he did it.

The penny pincher decided to overhaul his lifestyle after finding himself buried under a whopping £104,150 of debt. Bradley, 32, manages to save thousands by eating the same meal every day – using store brand products – and he only owns one plate. He ensures all his appliances are unplugged when he leaves the house, and refuses to turn on the heating – no matter how chilly he gets.

He also ensures he is frugal when it comes to trips and treats. He recently wanted to travel to Wyoming, US, but was gobsmacked after looking at the flight of a price from his home state of Connecticut – which typically takes around seven hours – and could not believe the $1,070 [£801.38] price tag.

Bradley said: “Being Bradley On A Budget, I said that’s stupid. I travelled a few hours to New York City and woke up the next day to catch my flight.” He paid $36.50 [£27.35] for the train. Bradley managed to cut the price down of his flight to $398.96 [£299] by flying from New York to Denvor, Calorado.

He advised: “Typically flights are so much cheaper if you fly out of major airports.” Bradley also says he saves money by travelling with a large backpack and taking it on the plane, instead of paying to check-in his luggage. He has had the same backpack since 2008, when he was at school.

“It’s roomy so it fits a lot, but it’s also squishy so it fits as a personal item,” he noted. Plus, Bradley does not pay to sit in a specific seat, instead he saves by letting the airline decipher his seat position.

Once Bradley arrived in Denvor, he rented a car for $99.80 [£74.77]. “I am sorry but I am not paying over $1,000 to fly when I know I can do it cheaper this way.” He also says the journey was “such a blast” and he was able to enjoy the views along the way. “It was like a mini road trip within the trip,” he added.

He had additional costs of tolls and petrol which totalled $36.37 [£27.25]. In total, his journey cost him $571.63 [£428.22], meaning he managed to save $498.37 [£373.34] by choosing the frugal route.

People rushed to comment on @baddie.brad’s advice video. One individual said: “Yes! I love flying into a major airport and then renting a car to drive to more remote parts!”

“I used to go to Wyoming for work and for real it is hundreds cheaper to fly into Denver and drive up,” said another who has followed the alternative route. “That’s crazy i was just in wyoming and paid 1000 for my flight,” commented another.

“My brain would never be this creative to save money,” said another wowed by the travel hack.

But others noted that the trick only works if you have the time. One said: “He has so much time to use instead of spending the money. some people don’t have the time to save the money. Traveling for a cheaper flight, right there is where most people can’t/won’t be able to.”

Another commented: “While I get this concept my time also has a value and for me personally I would have to take it into consideration. I did a road trip to Florida over the holidays because airfare was too expensive.”

“So like does your time not matter? Because sometimes spending a little more for your time is worth it,” questioned one other.
