Pickles have become so pedestrian that foodies are now fermenting their briney cukes in soda pop. A Mississippi mom filmed herself ordering pickles with her Dr. Pepper at a Sonic Drive-In to share a secret drink hack that’s now dividing viewers on social media.
“Do y’all like pickles? Do y’all like Dr Pepper?” drawled user @MississippiMemaw in the clip, which currently boasts 3.4 million views on the platform.
The Southerner then pulls up to the drive-thru window and orders a “large Dr Pepper with pickles” — an off-menu item she reportedly learned about from her 25-year-old daughter.
While it seemed like Memaw was gherkin her around, the Sonic employee acquiesced to the speakeasy-esque request, nonchalantly noting that the pickle charge would show up as “add cherries” on the receipt.
The unfazed worker then hands Memaw the PG-rated pickleback, which entails ice, Dr. Pepper and a raft of sliced pickles on top.
Many viewers were astounded by the casual interaction, suggesting that the employee had received that order before.
“The way she didn’t even flinch when you ordered it!” said one flabbergasted fan, while another wrote, “I love how she isn’t even phased.”
Indeed, this sweet and salty concoction may seem discordant, but the Mississippian was far from the first to try this fizzy Frankendrink.
“It’s called a Dr. Pepper Pucker! Ask for it!” exclaimed one viewer.
Another gushed, “Just stopped at the local sonic here in Rockwall, Texas and tried it and I definitely give it two thumbs up thanks memaw!!”
Others mentioned alternative versions of the pickled Dr. Pepper at other outlets with one writing, “You gotta go to Whataburger and get a Witch Doctor next! It’s a mix of all of their sodas in one cup with a pickle.”
Although before you jet off to the nearest Sonic, it’s worth noting that apparently, not every outlet tops their pop with cornichons. “I got to try this at home [because] the way my Sonic would call the police on me,” said one commenter.
Another declared, “I have worked for Sonic for over 20+ years and I have never gotten a customer that has ordered a pickle Dr Pepper.”
Some desperate fans even resorted to moonshining the solution themselves. “I ordered this today and they told me I couldn’t do that so I ordered a large Dr Pepper with pickles on the side and did it myself,” claimed one fast food MacGyver.
This isn’t the first time Sonic has infused a drink with pickle juice.
In 2022, the fast food chain famously brought back its Pickle Juice Slushie, a “Hulk” green beverage that combines the saltiness of a dill pickle with sweet and tart flavors.
