'I made cinnamon rolls with two-ingredient dough in my air fryer – they tasted delicious'

Cinnamon rolls, which are also known as cinnamon scrolls, are a delicious sweet snack often enjoyed with a cup of tea in the morning or as a dessert.

Usually, cinnamon rolls take a while to make because of the yeast element in the recipe. When adding yeast to a dough, it needs time to rise which can take a couple of hours.

With this recipe, I decided to try a quick and easy yoghurt dough which consists of just two ingredients – natural yoghurt and self-raising flour.

I’ve used this dough before for making speedy garlic bread, easy pizza and even flatbreads. Once you know the quantities, it’s a handy recipe you can keep coming back to for various bakes.

To make my cinnamon rolls I used an air fryer, a bowl, a wooden spoon, a rolling pin and some measuring apparatus.

The air fryer I used was the Philips XXL Connected Air Fryer which is available to buy from John Lewis for £99.99.

This is a powerful air fryer which can be used to cook just about anything from lasagne to chicken, chips and roasted vegetables.

This cinnamon roll recipe is fairly simple and doesn’t take up too much time. I’d advise being generous with the flour and making sure you definitely have plenty left over for dusting your worktop and rolling pin.

Ingredients:

  • Half cup Greek Yoghurt or natural yoghurt
  • One cup of self-raising flour (I ended up adding more to make the dough less sticky)
  • Two tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Half cup brown sugar
  • One and a half tbsps cinnamon (add more if you prefer a stronger taste)

Method:

1. I placed the yoghurt in a mixing bowl and gave it a quick stir before adding in the flour one half cup at a time. I found the dough very sticky so you may need to add more flour to the mix so it forms a ball.

2. Once the dough is formed and less sticky, tip it onto a well-floured surface and knead it with your hands for a few minutes. If the dough is sticking to your hands, you can add more flour. The dough will be ready when it can hold its shape and it’s no longer sticking to the surface or your fingers.

3. Roll the dough into a rectangular shape using a well-floured rolling pin. I found it difficult to make a rectangular shape but an oval shape worked fine.

4. Next, brush the dough with the melted butter before sprinkling on the brown sugar and cinnamon. I used dark brown sugar for a stronger flavour but white and brown sugar works fine too.

5. Roll the dough tightly and cut it into equal pieces. Spread the cinnamon rolls out in your air fryer basket or trays ensuring there’s space between each one so they can rise when baking. I put some baking parchment at the bottom of my air fryer so they didn’t stick to the air fryer and to make cleaning up easier. If you have a small air fryer, the rolls may need to be cooked in two batches.

6. Cook the cinnamon rolls for 10 to 15 minutes in the air fryer at 180C. I baked mine for 10 minutes, turned them over and then cooked them for another five.

7. Once cooked, allow them to cool before digging in!

If you wish, you can make your own cream cheese frosting to drizzle on top to make them even more decadent.
