Discovering stunning beaches in Britain might appear challenging. However, Chloe Lawford, a travel influencer, has uncovered a breathtaking coastal gem ideal for those warm summer afternoons. This hidden paradise, boasting crystal-clear waters, sits concealed beyond a series of ancient tunnels. During 2023, the avid adventurer journeyed to this destination for a seaside feast and refreshing dip. And the encounter proved absolutely magnificent.
Broadcasting her expedition on TikTok (@chloelawfordtravels), she said: “After paying a small fee to enter, you access the beach through these long tunnels. “The first set of tunnels leads you out to the Gentleman’s Beach, which is on the left and there is a wedding venue here. But you can continue going through more tunnels to get to the Ladies Beach on the right.”
“This was the more popular beach and it’s where the swimming pool normally is when the tide is out.
“But we opted to head back up to the Gentleman’s Beach as it was much quieter and it was like our own private little beach.”
Chloe’s ultimate recommendation is Tunnels Beaches, positioned along Ilfracombe’s coastline in Devon. Just a short distance from Exeter, under two hours by road, this shoreline also neighbours other picturesque locations including Woolacombe and Wildersmouth Beach.
According to Niche Museums, the tunnels date back to the 1820s when hundreds of Welsh miners spent two years carving out six passages in the Ilfracombe hillside.
This was during a time when North Devon was trying to position itself as an ideal holiday destination, providing tourists with access to the coast by foot or coach.
Currently, it costs £4 for adults (16 years and over) to visit Tunnels Beaches. Children between three and 15 can enter for £3.25, while those under three years old can go free.
Discounts are also available for students and senior citizens, along with family package deals – however, cash is not accepted on site.
“It was such a lovely day and the water was super clear,” Chloe continued. “[…]We had a little picnic and then went for a swim, although there were lots of jellyfish in the water, so we didn’t brave too long of a swim and we sort of had a quick dip.
“But it was still super refreshing. If you’re down in Devon, you must visit this beach on a super sunny day.”
Chloe’s comments quickly gained traction on TikTok, with many other users also praising the beauty of the beach. One person wrote: “This is down the bottom of my road, I have a season ticket and spend every day I can there! Bliss.”
Another added: “Omg I’ve been there it was so cool but more rocky then sandy.”
