How to whiten grout and remove stains fast without bleach

Grout is the white material between tiles and is constructed from porous substances, meaning it easily soaks up grime, food splashes and soap and stains a brown crusty shade if not maintained regularly. Scrubbing dirty grout can take a long time to see results, and it’s not the easiest solution, which is why it’s crucial to know the most effective method for cleaning this area using two time-saving products.

Tile grout requires soaking or wiping down, as it not only attracts marks but retains dampness and will eventually develop mould if neglected. Restoring grout to white is straightforward, according to Erin, a cleaning lover and founder of the Lemons Lavender and Laundry blog, who has shared that the top items for cleaning it are baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Erin said: “I have made a lot of cleaning recipes over the years, and I can honestly say this DIY Grout Cleaner is one of my favourites.

“The results are truly incredible! I am not kidding when I say it works like magic. My grout went from dirty brown to “like new” status with just a little scrubbing.”

Baking soda is naturally rough and absorbing, meaning it extracts stains from grout to restore cleanliness.

Hydrogen peroxide acts as a disinfectant, eliminating bacteria and mould whilst also brightening surfaces to rapidly whiten discoloured grout.

To clean and whiten grimy tile grout, start by tipping 110g of bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. This quantity is sufficient for tackling a small space like above a cooker, but for larger areas such as a bathroom or floor, you’ll require more.

Next, add a splash of hydrogen peroxide and blend until it creates a paste. If the mixture becomes too runny, simply add more bicarbonate of soda. You’re aiming for a consistency that will stick to a toothbrush or scrubbing brush without dripping off.

Begin the cleaning process by applying a small amount of the paste to an old toothbrush or bristled brush and working it into the grout. You should notice results almost instantly, with grime lifting away in just one or two scrubs.

After cleaning the grout, wipe over it with a damp sponge before drying with a fresh cloth to remove any bicarbonate of soda traces.

The grout should now appear brilliantly white and free from mould. Remember to bin the cleaning mixture as it typically only functions when freshly prepared.

Erin said: “This needs to be made and used right away. Hydrogen peroxide loses its effectiveness when exposed to light for too long (which is why it’s stored in a dark bottle).”

Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide combined can also build pressure over time, making leakage more probable if kept.
