Peace lilies are famed for their lush leaves and pristine white blooms, making them a favourite for sprucing up the home. And they’re not just pretty, they are also loved for their ability to filter out toxins and flourish in dim light.

Yet, it’s the blossoms that truly delight plant lovers who like to decorate their rooms with greenery. Not only do they enhance the plant’s beauty, but they also signal a thriving peace lily. Encouraging these houseplants to flower can be tricky, prompting many to seek advice on how to get those coveted blooms.

On the Flower Lovers Facebook group, green-fingered Helen Stevens shared her top tip for keeping her peace lily in bloom.

Helen posted a snap of her peace lily showcasing five robust white flowers, captioning it: “My peace lily has been non-stop blooming for three years.”

Her post sparked curiosity among the community, with comments flooding in asking, “What’s the secret?” and “How do you take care of them?”

Helen attributed her success to regular watering, explaining: “I water the plant every week. But I water from the bottom of the pot for 10 minutes.”

Peace lilies favour soil that’s consistently damp without being drenched or water-sodden. Bottom watering is particularly effective for peace lilies, ensuring the water reaches all parts of the root system thoroughly.

For this technique, fill the plant tray with soft or filtered water, making sure the soil is in contact with it. The water should reach about halfway up the side of the pot and never overflow.

Allow the plant to sit in the water for approximately 10 minutes. Check the soil to see if it has absorbed enough water.

If the soil feels damp all over, remove any surplus water from the tray. If the soil still feels dry, add more water to the tray.

Then let the plant drain completely.

However, always check the soil’s moisture before watering – insert your finger about one inch into the soil. If it feels dry at this depth, it’s time to give it a thorough watering.
