Limescale stains are the reason behind most tarnished taps and can be a pain to remove, particularly for those looking for an easy, quick fix. While there are many specialised limescale removing sprays, these can be costly and don’t always end up doing the job properly.
Sharing regular cleaning tips on her TikTok page @shaunamariehehe, Shauna said that she found “the single best way to remove limescale”. Despite it may sound “crazy”, she claimed that a 2p coin will do the trick. Shauna captioned her video: “We all have them! Use a 2p to remove that built-up limescale that won’t budge.”
Showing viewers her bathroom tap covered in limescale, Shauna said: “No matter what I use on this tap, this limescale just does not seem to go.”
Demonstrating the hack, the cleaning influencer started by holding a 2p coin under running water. She said: “Absolutely drench that 2p. You need to make sure it is soaking wet.”
Shauna then used the wet coin to rub over the tap, making sure to point out “you don’t want to be absolutely pushing the 2p piece crazy against the faucet”. Just make sure to give it a little bit of pressure.
Shauna assured: “That limescale just comes straight off.” Commenting on the state of her tap, she said: “Look at that. Absolutely incredible.”
The process took less than 15 seconds and doesn’t require any cleaning equipment at all.
So, how does a 2p coin work as a descaling hack? It is thought that a 2p coin creates a chemical reaction between copper and limescale to break it down.
The surprising 2p hack can also be used to banish limescale from shower heads and even toilet bowls and seats.
Alternatively, many cleaning fans recommend using lemons or vinegar when it comes to tackling limescale.
Both lemons and vinegar are acidic, which means that they can break down the calcium carbonate that limescale is made from.
