Scones hold a special place in the hearts of foodies everywhere. They come in many scrumptious varieties, such as time-honoured plain, fruity concoctions, or even the savoury kind smothered with cheese.
Owning a go-to yet versatile scone recipe allows you to effortlessly create your preferred variety at home, possibly even more cost-effectively than the shop-bought versions.
While scones are traditionally cooked in the oven, according to Liana Green’s recipe, they can also be made in the air fryer.
Taking to her food blog, she said: “Air fryer scones are a quick and easy recipe to make in an air fryer. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a small batch of this British classic without turning the oven on.”
Not only do these scones cook in such little time, only a handful of ingredients are needed.
Ingredients
225g self-raising flour plus extra for dusting
50g caster sugar
One teaspoon of baking powder
50g unsalted butter chilled and cut into small pieces
120ml whole milk and two tablespoons for the glaze
Method
Start by combining the self-raising flour, caster sugar, baking powder, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl.
Add the chilled, cubed butter to the bowl. Rub the butter into the flour mixture using your fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. If using, add the currants or sultanas and mix well.
Make a well in the centre of the mixture. Pour in the milk and mix it quickly with a round-bladed knife to form a soft dough. It will be quite soft and sticky.
Dust the surface with flour and turn the dough onto it. Knead it very briefly until it’s just smooth. Be careful not to over-knead.
Roll out the dough until it’s about three or 4cm thick. Use a round cutter to cut out the scones from the dough. you should be able to get around six scones out of this mixture.
Arrange the scones in the air fryer basket, making sure there’s space between them for the scones to expand as they cook.
You might have to cook in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
Brush the tops of the scones with milk before air frying at 180 degrees for about 10 minutes or until they are well-risen and golden brown.
