Everybody loves a portion of chips, but they have to be crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy in the middle. There’s a massive difference between the types of chips you can get at a chip shop and French fries, and everyone has their own opinions about which they prefer and make the better chip choice overall.
However, self-declared potato queen and chef Poppy O’Toole recently shared one key swap every home cook should make for the best homemade chips from scratch. Instead of using pre-made frozen chips, Poppy discovered a hack which uses already cooked baked potatoes. In a recent TikTok video, Poppy said: “I am really looking forward to ripping a baked potato. I’ve never ripped a potato before.

“This viral potato recipe is from Woody’s Cafe and it is hand-ripped chips, okay? So it’s baked potatoes that are then just hand-ripped into the fryer to make gorgeous, fat, crunchy, crispy, fluffy chips.”
Poppy described the recipe as a mix between a deep-fried roast potato, a chip and jacket potato.
How to make hand-ripped chips
First, Poppy whips up a seasoning for the chips. She uses a mix of salt, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika, as well as a sprinkling of pepper.
Using a deep fat frying, take your already cooked baked potato and rip it into generous chunks, keeping the skin on. Simply fry the potato pieces until they are crispy and golden in colour.

Poppy said: “This could be the new way I eat jacket potatoes.”
Shake off the excess oil, and pour the potatoes into the bowl with all the seasoning. Give the bowl a shake to make sure the chips are coated in all of the seasoning ingredients.
The chef continued: “These look incredible. They are golden… I need to stop saying golden and crispy and delicious, but they are. They smell gorgeous. They’ve got a nice crunch to them.”
She described the recipe as a fun way to make chips. By ripping the baked potato up, the oil can help all different parts of the spud crisp up that would usually get.
Poppy’s video has already been viewed over 109,100 times, receiving 9,388 likes and 82 comments, at the time of writing. Food fans shared their praise for the invention, with Beira saying: “I don’t know who invented this, but may their pillow always be cool and the traffic lights always green.”
Seany suggested: “A pinch of msg and a sprinkle of vinegar powder and these would be amazing.”
Karen agreed, “I used to love deep fried spuds when my mum did them in the chip pan,” while Pabla commented, “Oh my god these look super tasty!! Having these loaded with lots of different toppings is going to be beautiful.”
Another commented: “Now load those babies up with cheese, sour cream, bacon and green onion and yum!”
