If you’re a keen gardener, you’ll know that keeping an eye out for weeds and pests is so important for your garden’s health. One type in particular that you might mistake for being harmless is bindweed, which is technically a type of wildflower, but they can be bad news.
These wildflowers have very long roots and can effectively “strangle” other plants in your garden, killing them off. Because the roots run so deep, it’s hard to get rid of them, and even if you do, they can still grow back. But gardening expert Simon Akeroyd says there’s an easy way to make sure they are gone for good.
In a recent video, he explained that bindweed can be a “nightmare” if it’s spotted in your garden. This is becasue they compete with other plants for water and light sources, and their deep underground roots give them a big advantage.
He warned that it will “spread rapidly” if it’s not controlled, so swift action is key. Here’s what you should do if you come across any bindweed in your garden.
How to get rid of bindweed
One of the worst things about bindweed is how quickly it can spread, so it’s really important to get rid of it if you don’t want it in your garden.
The first step is pulling the weeds out of the ground, making sure you get the entire root out. Simon explained: “Every last bit of the root needs to be removed from the soil.”
But when you’ve picked it, never put it directly into your compost. Even when they have been picked, bindweed roots can still grow out of the compost and take over your gaden.
Instead, lay a large piece of chicken wire over your compost and place the fresh bindweed roots on top of it. If you leave them to dry out for a few weeks, they’ll die off and be unable to grow any more.
This one task – laying the bindweed on chicken wire (instead of on top of a compost pile) – can ensure the weed doesn’t return.
Only when the bindweed has completely dried out can you put it in your compost, as this means there is no more risk of it potentially growing back.
