Food storage hacks are life-saving when it comes to extending the life of fruits and vegetables, especially for keeping celery crisp and fresh. Celery, a kitchen essential, is incredibly versatile, finding its way into a myriad of dishes. Whether it’s being dunked into hummus, forming the foundation of soups and stews, or adding a satisfying crunch to salads, celery is a must-have in any culinary repertoire.

However, without proper preparation before storage, those long, crunchy stalks can quickly become limp or mushy. But fear not, with the correct repackaging and storing techniques, celery can enjoy an extended shelf life.

Mike from Kitchen Tips Online took to YouTube to reveal a storage trick that “actually works” for maintaining celery’s freshness.

In his demonstration, Mike showed viewers how he keeps celery in his fridge, snugly wrapped in tin foil, which had been stored for “four weeks”.

Mike declared: “I have this celery wrapped up tightly in aluminium foil. This has been in there for four weeks. Let’s have a look at it.”

Upon unwrapping the celery, Mike tested its firmness by snapping it, resulting in a resounding crunch. So what’s the secret behind tin foil’s effectiveness? Mike claimed: “The reason the foil works best is that the foil protects the celery from ethylene gas, which is the culprit behind vegetables spoiling more rapidly.”

Although it’s the most common thing to do, keeping celery in its original plastic bag may hasten its spoilage due to trapped ethylene gas released by the produce.

For an extended fridge life of up to a month, begin with an entire head of celery, rather than separate stalks.

It’s also advised to remove any leaves to prolong freshness, as they tend to spoil quickly and can compromise the rest of the celery.

The next tip is optional: you might wrap the celery in a dry or moist paper towel before the key step.

Most crucially, ensure the full head of celery is tightly wrapped with tin foil, enhancing its crispness and preserving its freshness admirably.

One enthused viewer confirmed the efficacy of this approach on a video post, where @roxo36 acclaimed: “His trick to preserve celery is game-changing. I was able to keep my two huge celery stalks for two months, and they were still fresh and extremely crunchy.”

Others chimed in with their support and shared experiences. @chillytoes337 said: “Awesome tip! My celery always goes bad before I can use it all up! I will try this for sure! Thanks!”

@bonniediep5324 added: “Yeah, that’s what I do and it works!” while @wildandes1185 noted: “Awesome, I’ve lost so much celery over the years to sogginess. Thanks.”
