Roses can make or break a garden. If they’re healthy, these beautiful plants look truly stunning. However, mistakes can be made when growing roses, which can lead to them looking dead and dreary. This can be avoided, however, by pairing them with these three plants.

Taking to YouTube, gardening pro Amrita Bhortake shared several companion plants that will enhance the appeal of your garden while also deterring pests, which in turn leads to healthier roses. Just plant these three plants near your rosebeds and see them work their magic, leaving you with healthy and gorgeous roses.

Lavender

Lavender is the first plant recommended by Amrita, which she plants right next to her roses. She explained: “They thrive in similar conditions, and love the sun and well-drained soil.”

The experts at Gardenia.net add that while roses typically attract aphids, lavender plants are a favourite of their natural predator, ladybirds. Thus, when lavender and roses are planted near one another, you’ll have some natural and relatively low-effort pest control.

Lavender is also considered a relatively easy plant to grow, meaning you won’t have too much added work when planting these alongside your beautiful roses.

Alliums

Amrita also recommends planting alliums, as they have a strong, pungent smell that can ward off aphids and other pests.

Alliums are also said to prevent black spot from developing on roses, so they are a great choice if you have been struggling with this in recent years.

Options within the allium family that can be easily grown in your garden include chives and garlic, meaning you’ll have both beautiful-looking roses, and won’t have to rush out to the shop for garlic, and instead just harvest it when it grows.

Sage

Another great companion plant for roses is sage, which can prevent aphids and beetles from attacking.

Amrita notes that with its purple blooms, sage will also look particularly beautiful growing next to your roses.

Sage has a second benefit to your garden, as Amrita explained: “While it is deterring all the pests, it is attracting these beautiful pollinators, like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.”
