As the weather stays warm, houseflies seem to make themselves right at home in our kitchens, living rooms, and gardens. These pesky insects buzz around food and bins, land on surfaces and lay eggs.
Summer provides the perfect breeding conditions for flies, which is why they seem to multiply overnight. Whether indoors or outdoors, keeping flies under control is key to enjoying a clean, comfortable space. Gardening expert James Higgins at Grass247 has shared three ways to keep flies out of your garden so you can still enjoy your time outdoors without any pesky bugs.
Essential oil candles
One of the best ways to deter flies when you’re outside is to use essential oil candles “to mask any food smells”, says James.
“Flies hate citronella, so placing a citronella candle on any garden dining tables or around seating areas can be a great way to keep any flies away.”
Other scents such as pine and lavender are also disliked by flies. “Candles with these scents will deter flies, and are a more aesthetically pleasing option for your garden,” he added.
“However, bear in mind that while flies dislike the smell of pine, pine essential oil is toxic to pets – so it’s best to stay away from using these if you have any furry friends around.”
Attract bees and other insects
“When you want to get rid of flies, a natural way is actually to attract other insects – especially those that aren’t as bothersome in the garden, such as bees,” says James.
This is because bees actively defend their hives and feeding areas. If a fly gets too close, bees may chase or sting them, which teaches flies to keep their distance.
James added: “Flies will avoid bees, so planting bee-friendly plants will not only help your garden’s ecosystem, but will also keep any flies out of your garden.
“Bees can see purple flowers better than any others, so plants like lavender, verbena and catmint can be a great way to attract bees.”
The expert also recommends introducing more wildlife into your garden such as spiders and frogs, which eat flies.
Use fly traps
A quick and easy solution is the use of fly traps in your home and garden.
James said: “If you want a quick solution for how to get rid of a fly, fly tape may be your best bet. Fly tape, or sticky traps, can be hung around high activity areas of your garden.
“Flies like to perch while they rest, making fly tape the perfect way to trap any pesky flies before they reach your outdoor dining area. Just be sure you replace them regularly to keep them effective.”
How to make a fly trap
Make a homemade fly trap by using an empty plastic bottle or jar. Start by cutting the top third off the bottle, then create a funnel, securing it with tape.
Pour in a sweet bait such as sugar water, fruit juice, or a piece of overripe fruit, and for extra effectiveness, add a drop of dish soap to break the surface tension so flies can’t escape.
Place the trap in areas where flies are most active, such as near bins, compost, or outdoor seating. Over time, the flies will be drawn to the bait, crawl in through the funnel, and become trapped inside.
When it fills up, simply empty, rinse, and refill it with fresh bait to keep it working.
