If you eat citrus fruits at home, an expert has said you should keep the peel for one reason which could benefit your home. Citrus fruits have many benefits from being good for your immune system to aiding digestion but this use will benefit your home.

No matter how clean you keep your home, unpleasant odours can develop from time to time. Whether it is coming from your kitchen bin, drains, musty carpets or even just last night’s dinner, these foul odours can quickly take effect. Fortunately, you don’t need to use harsh chemicals to freshen up your space and you can instead keep your citrus peels to make your home smell good – Joyce French explains how.

Joyce, cleaning expert at HomeHow.co.uk says citrus peels are the secret to a fresh smelling home.

She says: “Citrus peels contain natural oils that can freshen the air and neutralise unpleasant smells without the need to use any harsh chemicals.

“Simmering the peels of fruits such as oranges and lemons in a pot on the stove can leave your kitchen smelling wonderfully fresh.

“They can also be combined with white vinegar to form a fantastic natural cleaning solution with degreasing and antibacterial properties.

“Place the peels in a large glass jar and submerge them in the vinegar. Let the mixture sit for about two weeks to allow the peels to infuse with the vinegar and work their cleaning magic.”

It’s tempting to reach for air fresheners and scented candles to mask unpleasant smells but this won’t create a long-lasting fresh smell. Not only this but these can be packed with chemicals which can trigger allergies or headaches.

Relying on commercial fresheners can become costly over time so opting for a homemade approach is healthier and more economical in the long-run.

Incorporating these natural methods into your cleaning routines will allow you to effectively eliminate odours without introducing potentially harmful chemicals into your living space.

These economical and environmentally friendly approaches are sure to have you receiving compliments on the beautiful fragrance of your home in no time.
