'Highly acidic' 70p cupboard staple removes limescale from toilet bowls in under an hour

Even the cleanest of bathrooms can look dirty if there are unpleasant stains in the toilet bowl.

Some stains are temporary but if you find the stains aren’t budging using toilet cleaners or bleach, then it’s likely limescale or hard water stains.

Limescale tends to be worse in hard water areas where there’s a high mineral content in the water supply.

The minerals in hard water such as calcium and magnesium combine to form limescale as the water evaporates in the toilet bowl.

There are a plethora of chemical options available for removing limescale, however, these can be expensive and pungent-smelling.

Express.co.uk has spoken to two cleaning experts about how to remove limescale from toilets without using harsh chemicals.

Andrea Philips, from Airtasker’s lifestyle editorial team has shared an affordable, “highly acidic” staple for removing toilet limescale that costs just 70p.

She exclusively told Express.co.uk: “It may come as a surprise to you (or not) that Coca-Cola is highly acidic and while some of you drink it, you can also clean with it.

“Because of its phosphoric acidity at a pH level of 2.8, it makes Coca-Cola comparable to fresh lemon juice, vinegar and wine.

“Coca-Cola can be used to clean the toilet bowl and remove limescale. To clean it, pour coke around the inside of the toilet bowl and leave for an hour or so. Then flush and use the toilet brush to remove.

“It can also be used to clean mould on your grout, simply pour Coca-Cola on the affected area or use a Coca-Cola-soaked towel and place it on top of the grout.

“Let it sit for a few moments and wipe clean. Scrubbing might be required on some of the mould.”

James Roberts, director at Sanctuary Bathrooms, also suggested using cola to remove toilet limescale.

He said: “When it comes to toilet seats, did you know a can of fizzy Coke can remove hard water marks and limescale from your toilet bowl?

“To use Coke to clean your toilet, simply pour a few glasses into the bowl, letting it sit for a couple of hours allowing the acids in the coke to break down stains, then scrub the toilet bowl to remove the marks leaving a spotlessly clean toilet bowl.”

Cola can be bought from most local supermarkets. Sainsbury’s Cola and Asda Cola costs 70p.
