Heart-stopping moment plane avoids horrific crash at Heathrow amid Storm Gerrit chaos

Horrific weather sparked by Storm Gerrit has sparked a travel meltdown and bedlam at Heathrow airport which saw a Boeing 777 narrowly avoid an accident when coming into land.

The aircraft, operated by an American airline, was coming to land when it was struck by high winds that caused it to have a rocky landing as the pilots battled with the controls. The moment was captured on Big Jet TV whose host responded dramatically to the unfolding landing.

Writing on X, the Big Jet TV said: “American 777 insane landing at London Heathrow! Caught during our live stream at @HeathrowAirport. Strong, gusting crosswind elements catching out even the most seasoned pilots! Wouldn’t have liked being the NFP on this one. Watch the flight surfaces.”

The video sparked a wave of responses from astonished users who shared their astonishment at both the aircraft’s landing and the commentary.

One person said: “I have been a passenger that experienced this type of landing. The nose coming up though.”

Another user commented: “OMG. Glad it landed safe. Been in a similar situation twice this year (and the pilots decided to go around after attempting to land), I don’t want to imagine what the passengers experienced. Terrifying is an understatement.”

A third noted: “Best real-time, play by play I’ve heard in a long time!” A fourth person wrote: “Awesome short Gilly! Also, extremely gracious of you and Jerry to allow many other news outlets to use the footage. BigJetTV is a class act!”

Big Jet TV’s footage quickly spread around the world as once again the channel became a viral hit. The channel also went viral during Storm Eunice when the public was glued to their live stream footage of aircraft coming into land with different levels of success.

The channel is hosted by aviation enthusiast Jerry Dyer whose fan base has grown in recent years thanks to his videos. Speaking to the BBC in 2022, Mr Dyer described his admiration for the crews on the aircraft.

He said: “This is the best scenario you could possibly imagine – big kudos to the pilots and the crews working at the airports, this is the most exciting stuff you could possibly get. And what is great is you get to see the skill of the pilot and how they manage to handle it.”
