A “haunting” psychological drama film that’s been branded a “work of art” by viewers is set to air tonight.

Written and directed by Todd Field, Tár follows the fictional classical music composer Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), the first female director of a major German orchestra.

The film, which was released in 2022, sees Lydia grappling with her genuis as she struggles for inspiration while trying to compose her next masterpiece. However, her life soon begins to unravel after she is accused of misconduct.

The supporting cast includes Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover, Allan Corduner and Mark Strong.

The film premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in September 2022, where lead actress Cate won the Volpi Cup for Best Acress.

Shortly after its release in cinemas, Tár received critical acclaim, with Cate earning praise for her performance as Lydia. The drama has since been regarded as one of the best films of the 2020s and the 21st century.

Tár was nominated for six awards at the 95th Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Cate notably won the BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, as well as being nominated for the Academy Award and Screen Actors Guild Award in the same category.

If you haven’t yet watched the psychological drama, now’s your chance as it is set to air on BBC Two tonight (Sunday, September 14) at 10pm.

Fans have continued to share their praise for the film on social media, with one person writing on IMDb: “Cate Blanchett gives a flawless performance as a flawed music conductor. This film is a masterpiece.”

Another added: “One of the most meticulously crafted films I have ever seen. With razor sharp direction and writing from Todd Field, one of Cate Blanchett’s career best performances, and a subtly powerful supporting cast helmed by Nina Hoss, Tár is a haunting meditation on the corrupting nature of power shown through the lens of the individual. It will sitck in your head for weeks.”

A third said: “This film is a mesmerising, uncompromising character study. It’s an experience, and is both hypnotic and unsettling.”

A fourth viewer echoed the sentiment, saying: “From a directorial and acting perspective, this film is intoxicating. Convincing, intimate, nuanced and utterly believable. A true gem of a film.”

Tár will air at 10pm on BBC Two on Sunday, September 14
