Hamas attack on Israel put to pupils as debate topic sparking school investigation

A school is being investigated after it allegedly asked pupils to debate whether it was “fair” for Hamas to attack Israel.

It comes after a set of slides from a classroom presentation were shared by a concerned mother on Mumsnet after she found out her child had been made to discuss the October 7 attacks in class.

Following the post, education secretary Gillian Keegan said she would be investigating the unnamed secondary school.

She said: “I’m horrified to see this. Hamas are terrorists. Their actions are indefensible and anyone encouraging support for them should feel the full force of the law.

“Extremism has no place in education and I have launched an urgent review.”

The user who shared the material said their child had been shown the slides which showed Israel annexing land from Palestine and people in the country suffering.

She described the lesson as a “very one-sided” picture of the war between Hamas and Israel.

Her post read: “By contrast, there is one line on the Holocaust and two lines on the October 7 attacks.

“To me, this is inviting students to justify terrorism.”
