Hairstylist exposes 'biggest mistake' people make when they wash their hair

A celebrity hair stylist has revealed the “biggest mistake” people make when conditioning their hair.

Jonathon Van Ness, star of Netflix’s Queer Eye, took to TikTok to share his hair washing routine and surprised viewers by saying that a tool is needed to spread conditioner through the hair.

He explained that you don’t need to keep the shower running while applying conditioner and that it should be applied to the ends of the hair first before being rubbed into the scalp and roots.

The biggest error, he said, is not using a brush to detangle in the shower as this ensures the conditioner is distributed evenly.

Jonathon said: “So, make sure you are using a wet brush or a wide-tooth comb in the shower to really work the conditioner from your roots to your ends. Otherwise, your hair isn’t getting the full benefits of the conditioner.”

Viewers expressed their confusion at the advice, having always believed that brushing your hair when wet can cause damage. One viewer stated: “I was always told not to brush my hair when it’s wet!”

Another agreed: “I was told not to brush my hair when it’s wet because it breaks easier.” And another chimed in: “I was always told to not brush when wet as your hair weakens and can cause breakage.”

Reacting to these comments, Jonathon assured his viewers that brushing hair gently while wet should not result in any breakage. Another person thanked him saying the tip “saved” her hair and was “This is actually so helpful.”

Later in the video, Jonathon shared his tips on how to shampoo hair healthily. He enunciated the importance of choosing a shampoo that caters to one’s specific hair needs.

He emphasised: “Your style starts in the shower so if you’re going for something smooth, use a hydrating shampoo. If you want volume, use something volumising. Your goals start in the shower.”

Lastly, he advised viewers to properly apply shampoo to every part of their scalp – the top, sides, and back. To help evenly distribute the shampoo, add some shower water to it, he added.

He said: “I use the pads of my fingers to make circular motions and to remove any dirt and debris. I’m not scrubbing my hair with shampoo. The shampoo is more for your scalp – your ends don’t really need to get washed like that because the soap is going to wash over them anyway.”
