Nothing is more satisfying than a clean bathroom, but they can often look grimy and unkept if you have any black lines or spots on the tile grout. Grout tends to be tricky to keep clean as it is made up of very absorbent material, which means dirt and mould spores can easily become trapped.
Many people resort to using bleach on grout, but this only removes surface mould as it cannot penetrate to reach any embedded spores, and if left untreated, the mould can spread to tiles and cause permanent staining. However Jayden Copeland, a cleaning expert and founder of Backroad Bloom, has shared that a simple baking soda can effectively target even the most stubborn mould.
She said: “Because of its abrasive texture, baking soda is great at removing dirt and build-up. Its not too abrasive though so it shouldn’t cause any damage to your tile or grout.
“It’s a mild alkali which means it can cause dirt and grease to dissolve easily in water, so it can be wiped up and removed.”
Baking soda is a fine gritty powder that can get into porous material to dislodge all the mould spores without having to use harsh chemicals.
It is very abrasive which will help lift any deep stains on grout and clear any build up while also being a natural product that is much safer to handle than bleach.
The best way to clean mould grout is to mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide, a disinfectant considered a more natural alternative to bleach, and also washing up liquid, which will help remove any greasy soap stains from the grout.
How to deep clean grout to remove mould
To begin, put on a pair of gloves and get a basin. Mix together two parts hydrogen peroxide with one part baking and then add two tablespoons of washing up liquid.
The cleaning solution should look like a thick and slightly foamy paste. Use your gloved hands to spread the paste along each grout line on a tile until they are completely covered.
Then, simply let the solution sit for 10 minutes as the cleaning solution needs time to break down the dirt and mould spores.
Once the time is up, use a scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush to clean the grout line. After only a few scrubs, the grout should whiten and look much cleaner in just a few minutes.
Use a wet cloth to remove any dirt, and then dry it with another clean cloth. Your bathroom times should now be completely white and mould-free using without having to use bleach.
