Gerrit storm batters UK with deadly weather as urgent warnings made to drivers

The tyre fitter and mechanic company ATS Euromaster has shared a number of tips to help motorists keep safe when driving in stormy weather this winter.

With Storm Gerrit bringing strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the UK, a recent study found that just 51 percent of drivers slow down when travelling in wet weather.

A spokesperson for ATS Euromaster noted that motorists that need to drive during a storm should always make sure they can be seen by other road users.

They advised: “If visibility is seriously reduced due to rain and spray from the roads, you should use your dipped headlights to help you and others.

“The research revealed almost two thirds (62 percent) of British drivers are not aware that using these will help improve visibility, despite the fact that it could land you a fine.”

The company warned drivers that not turning their vehicle’s headlights on when travelling in the dark or during bad weather conditions can face a £50 on-the-spot fine.

Drivers should also regularly check that all of their lights are fully working before setting off on long journeys, along with fluids such as windscreen washer fluid.

ATS Euromaster also recommended that drivers check that their vehicles tyres have enough tread in order to clear away water and reduce skidding.

The company’s spokesperson also highlighted drivers heading out in a storm should give themselves plenty of time to complete their journey at a slower speed.

They explained: “During heavy rainfall, the roads will inevitably be more slippery than usual, which affects your braking time and general control of the car.

“Give yourself more time to react. Highways England says you should slow down and increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front to at least four seconds.”

Finally, ATS Euromaster also urged drivers to avoid a significant fine by making sure their visibility is not restricted by condensation.

They continued: “Driving in the rain can mean your windows are likely to quickly steam up. Making sure you have your air conditioning on to make sure your visibility isn’t reduced.

“Driving with misty windows could land you a £1,000 fine and three points on your licence.”
