Special counsel Jack Smith’s team contacted Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in its investigation into former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
“Our office has been contacted by Jack Smith’s office,” Andrew Isenhour, a spokesperson for the Georgia governor, said in a statement to multiple outlets.
USA TODAY has reached out to Kemp’s office for more information.
The former president confirmed last week that he is a target of a federal investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, and he could be indicted soon on charges related to his push to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 race for the White House.
Trump in a statement said Smith sent a letter “giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment.”
The Washington Post first reported Smith’s office contacting Kemp.
Georgia:Court rejects Trump request to bar state from prosecuting him over election dealings
It’s not clear what the former president could be charged with in the sprawling federal investigation. It centers on whether Trump incited supporters ahead of the insurrection at the Capitol and his efforts to overturn Biden’s win in several key states, among other allegations.
Those states include Georgia, where Trump is also the subject of a separate investigation from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
Willis began investigating after Trump called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in January 2021 to plead with him to “find” the votes he needed to win the state.
Kemp earlier this year called on fellow Republicans to not be “distracted” during the 2024 presidential election, appearing to criticize Trump without naming him.
“If we get distracted and talk about other things that the Democrats want to talk about, like these investigations, regardless of what you think about the politics of those,” Kemp continued. “If we get distracted every day and let the media just talk about that, that only helps Joe Biden.”
Kemp defeated a Trump-backed primary opponent in Georgia last year.
