Poinsettia are cheerful houseplants which have become the classic Christmas plant due to their fiery red flowers and rich green leaves.
They are a popular gift during the holiday and while they make beautiful blooms, they are known to begin drooping or even die quickly after the festive period as most people do not not how to take care of them.
Michael Griffiths is an experienced gardener who has shared his top tips for keeping poinsettia alive and thriving for years to come.
In a video online, Michael said: “Does your poinsettia always die really quickly? Well, this is how to keep it alive over Christmas and well into next year.”
One of the biggest reasons poinsettia tend to die or become unhealthy is being exposed to extreme temperatures, which can easily be done at this time of year due to the cold frosty weather outside and the warm heated rooms inside.

When you get home, Michael stressed it is very important to replant them in a pot and to not overwater them.
He said: “Put them in a bright draught-free position and only water them when the top of the compost is starting to feel dry. “
Poinsettia should be placed somewhere bright in indirect sunlight, which means not directly at a window as it can damage the petals. They will grow best in temperatures between 13C and 15C.
Keeping them away from windows, doorways are fireplaces is essential as the temperature in these places can change significantly during the day, which can damage the plant.
To get them to flower, feed poinsettia plant food high in potassium such as tomato food, but you can also encourage them to flower by moving them into a dark area of the home for 12 hours a day and make sure they are not exposed to artificial lighting.
Increase the humidity around the plant by misting the leaves and keep them looking incredible for Christmastime.
Michael said that making sure your poinsettia thrives starts at the gardening centre, as there are signs to look out for to make sure the plant is healthy and not temperature-damaged.
He said: “When buying a poinsettia, make sure it is in good condition. It should have dark green foliage to the soil line.”
“Avoid buying poinsettia that have been left by a door at a petrol station forecourt. The cool air will have already gotten to it and it just won’t last.”
Once you have picked out your poinsettia flowers, Michael suggests covering the plant until you get home and making sure the leaves are not exposed to freezing temperatures.
He said: “Make sure its delicate leaves are protected for the journey home and definitely don’t leave it in the car overnight.”
