Gardeners have been told how they can successfully keep mosquitoes away this summer and there is one thing they can start doing right now. Mosquitoes are an annoyance for many Brits who find these insects arriving in their gardens in the summer months. There are a number of things that attract mosquitoes to a garden and while you can eliminate these, you may still find them flying around the space outside your home.
If you want to keep mosquitoes away from your garden, there are many things you can do. While planting certain flowers in your garden might help to repel them, these are not always readily available to us and we might not always have space for them in our already full gardens. But there are other things you can do to keep mosquitoes away this summer and one of them can be done right now. The experts at Lighting Legends have shared their top tips including one trick you might not have thought of before. To keep mosquitoes out of your garden, you should place a fan in the area.
Amid a heatwave that has swept over the UK, evenings can become warm and humid which creates the perfect conditions for mosquitos to thrive. Fans are a great way to keep mosquitos away from your garden.
This trick works because mosquitos hate wind. By creating even a light breeze, they will be more hesitant to come to your garden. Gardeners should set up fans in areas of the garden where they tend to sit, such as on the patio or around the barbecue.
This should be done particularly on warm and still evenings when you don’t feel much wind. These tend to be the nights where we enjoy sitting in the garden, so you will notice a difference when you introduce a fan.
Another trick gardeners can use is to set the right lighting. “When choosing your outdoor lights it’s definitely worth opting for yellow or warm tones lights with a colour temperature between 2,200K and 2,700K as these are much less likely to invite insects into your garden,” Jon Saeed, managing director of Lighting Legends said.
“While you’re sitting out in the garden into the late evening, you may notice there are more mosquitos, especially if you have cool toned garden lights. A lot of people aren’t aware that these lights tend to attract mosquitos and other pesky bugs which can turn into a real nuisance when trying to enjoy your garden.”
The other tips they suggest to get rid of mosquitos from your garden are:
- Remove still water as mosquitos are attracted to this. Removing this can stop populations from increasing.
- Install mosquito traps with human-mimicking scents.
- Maintain your garden and stop it from becoming overgrown.
- Use essential oils such as lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus. Spray these around your garden to repel mosquitos.
- Encourage natural predators such as birds, bats and certain insects like dragonflies.
