Is a fried egg still a fried egg if you cook it without a frying pan? Naming debate aside, there’s a way to get perfect fried eggs every time with no mess and no effort – and you don’t need a frying pan.
Fried eggs are a delicious staple part of any cooked breakfast and are a quick and easy way to get a tasty protein boost. But frying in hot oil can be messy, noisy and even quite unhealthy thanks to all the extra calories if you use too much oil, let alone the smoke and crispy burnt edges to your fried egg. But there is a way to get perfect fried eggs every time in less than one minute without even needing a frying pan – by using the microwave.
It’s a fried egg cooking method my dad used to swear by, but it turns out he wasn’t a mad eccentric as in fact experts also swear by this way of cooking fried eggs.
It’s extremely easy to make fried eggs in the microwave. As the One Sweet Appetite food blog explains: “Let me begin by saying, these Microwave Fried Eggs will truly change your life. You think I’m kidding, but I’m not! With just a one-minute cook time, they’ve become my son’s go-to breakfast he can make in the blink of an eye, no joke.
“At our house, we’ve been cooking eggs in the microwave for years. It’s actually one of our favourite methods. It’s pretty much hassle-free, totally foolproof and yields consistent results every time. On top of that, there’s little to no mess.”
To make microwave fried eggs, spray or rub a little oil on a dish or deep plate. Then, crack an egg into the dish. Take a knife and gently pierce the yolk (not enough to actually break it – but this prevents it exploding later), then pop it into the microwave on high for 30 seconds.
Leave it to stand for one minute, then check the egg. If you like it more well done, you can add more 10 second increments to cook it a little more.
Then simply serve onto toast, bread or whatever you fancy – fuss-free.
