Family left furious as killer set free after 'pathetically short' sentence

Francis Matthew is back in the UK after getting a pardon for the slaughter of Jane in Dubai.

The British journalist hit the 62-year-old twice over the head after she called him a “loser” in a row over money. He then blamed the death of his wife of 30 years on a fictitious robbery before he finally confessed.

Matthew, the former editor of Gulf News, originally got 10 years for manslaughter in 2018 but has been freed after five. His sentence had been cut to seven years on appeal.

He is thought to have been among 988 Dubai prisoners freed after being pardoned by United Arab Emirates president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as part of Eid al-Adha celebrations in June.

Jane’s brother Peter Manning said he has “nothing but contempt” for his sister’s killer. Mr Manning, from Essex, said: “After he brutally killed my sister by smashing her face in with a hammer, this guy’s excuse was she allegedly provoked him by calling him a loser.”

“If she did say that, and we’ll never know, she was obviously understating things by some margin.”

“I have nothing but contempt for him and all the sycophants who oddly support him, and that includes the anti-women legal system in the UAE that has let him out after a pathetically short sentence.”

Over the weekend the killer launched his own YouTube channel, This Week In The Middle East.

Matthew, who was 61 at the time of the attack in July 2017, claimed he suffered from a “moment of insanity” and struck his wife twice on the head as she lay in bed.
