Express readers vote on which country will be next to join the EU – and one is a surprise

Over the past few years, a number of European countries were given candidate status to potentially join the EU next. The most high profile was Ukraine, currently fighting off Russian invasion. The president Volodymyr Zelensky has been vocal is joining the bloc since the invasion nearly two years ago.

So, as a number of countries are in talks to join, Express.co.uk readers were asked which country should be next in line to be accepted into the EU with the results showing large support for Ukraine’s bid for entry.

Volodymyr Zelensky has been lobbying hard for EU membership presenting Ukraine’s fight as one for European values and democracy.

In the poll, we found that 32 per cent of readers believe Ukraine deserves to be next to join the European Union.

This places Ukraine far ahead of Türkiye in second place at 14 percent.

Türkiye’s EU membership bid has been stalled for a long time despite efforts to revive it due to controversial President Tayyip Erdogan.

Ankara and Brussels have clashed publically with the latter accusing the regime of Erdogan of sliding into authoritarianism. Surprisingly, the next highest was Albania with 11 percent of readers predicting the country to be next in line to joint the EU.

The Balkan country was granted candidate status in 2014 and is embarking on an anti-corruption drive to smooth the path to membership.

However, 15% of readers said they weren’t sure which country from the candidate list is likely to be accepted into the bloc next.

Here are the results in full:
