Expert shares ‘effective deterrent against intruders’ as car thefts continue to increase

The garage retailer Lidget Compton has shared a number of tips to help motorists keep their car safe from criminals as vehicle theft rates continue to rise.

According to the company, 187,749 break ins were recorded in England and Wales alone during 2023, with nearly 21,000 cases involving garages, putting cars at risk.

Richard Berry, garage expert at Lidget Compton, noted that the easy way of preventing break ins is by fitting additional locks.

He advised: “Most break-ins are crimes of opportunity, and thieves will look for an easy target. One of the simplest ways to protect your property is to make things awkward for intruders.

“For example, by adding additional point locking to the side door, or by adding a hasp lock and padlock to the main garage door. If things appear difficult, thieves are more likely to move onto an easier target.”

The company also advised motorists to add a Garage Defender, a specific type of lock that is attached to a heavy item such as a brick or concrete slab.

With many garages featuring an ‘up and over’ door, which is lifted to gain access, a Garage Defender will make it much harder for a thief to gain access.

Lidget Compton also noted that they are also useful as a visual deterrent and can typically be bought for around £60.

In addition, Richard highlighted that any windows showing items inside the garage should be covered over to avoid gaining attention from criminals.

He explained: “If there’s a window in your garage or shed, consider putting a curtain up or fitting a blind. Alternatively, apply opaque film to glass on the inside.

“This will hide the contents and any valuables you may have inside from prying eyes. Additionally, glass frost paint or spray can also be used as a cheaper alternative for securing your garage.”

Finally, Richard recommended that devices such as motion activated floodlights, alarms and security cameras will also make thieves think twice before attempting to steal cars.

He continued: “Often, deterrents are the most effective way of limiting theft. Motion activated security lights can be an effective deterrent against intruders.

“Using infra-red waves, a sensor detects body temperature and movement triggering the floodlight, putting off thieves hoping to operate in the darkness. Motion activated lights are available in most hardware and DIY stores for as little as £10.”
