Expert shares 6 gardening trends all gardeners should be following in 2024

Here GardeningExpress’ Chris Bonnett gives his tips on the gardening trends we’ll all be following in 2024.

It may still be a little chilly to get out and spend hours in the garden but now is the perfect time to be planning your outside space for 2024.

This year has some strong gardening trends which may change the way we garden and the plants we include in our schemes.

Taking climate concerns into account when selecting planting will be a growing trend, as well as trying traditionally indoor plants out in sunny spots in the garden.

Growing your own will continue to be a massive trend and gardeners will carry on looking for more ways to grow.

Here are my gardening predictions for 2024:

1. Grow your own

Growing your own fruit and vegetables will continue to increase in popularity. It’s good for saving money on the food shop and it’s becoming more important for consumers to know exactly where food is coming from.

2. Plant and garden choices

Climate concerns will influence plant and garden choices. Gardeners will opt for resilient plants which can withstand extremes of weather. With summers becoming much hotter and drier, plants need to be able to survive. Likewise during spells of extreme wet weather.

3. Indoor plants outdoors

Indoor plants will increasingly be used outdoors in gardens and patio planters and not just resilient succulents. Don’t be surprised to start seeing people try traditional house plants in the garden like flowering kalanchoes as bedding plants and rubber plants as patio centerpieces. Even trailers like Devil’s Ivy in an unusual hanging basket especially one in a ‘Cyber Lime’ colour.

4. Plant colours

Cyber Lime is a trend colour for 2024 along with pantone colour of the year Peach Fuzz which will influence popular flower schemes. Other popular choices will include deep moody colours and contrasting purples.

5. Wildlife and sustainability

Wildlife and sustainability will influence and concern a lot of gardeners wanting to be ecological in their gardens. Gardeners will seek alternatives to traditional garden chemicals like weedkillers. They’ll be selecting plants to benefit wildlife and pollinators will also be a popular choice. Garden designs will start to incorporate sustainable energy too and we’ll see how solar panels, wind turbines and heat pumps can all be integrated into a clever design. These spaces will be multi-functional, perhaps offering a WFH hideaway at the bottom of the garden which then converts to an entertaining space.

6. Houseplants

2024 will see a further resurgence in houseplants, and in particular rare and variegated foliage. Varieties that have skyrocketed in price up to thousands of pounds during the pandemic are now being propagated and grown more widely in the trade. These could become much more mainstream with significantly more affordable prices in 2024.
