A travel expert has revealed the stunning European island where Brits need to head this year for its amazing beaches, great weather and delicious food. Europe is full of scenic islands where tourists are treated to hot summer days, gorgeous resorts and picture-perfect views. Islands in countries like Italy, Spain and Greece are popular with British tourists, especially in the summertime. But there are other islands in Europe that we should consider visiting for a more underrated experience.

One travel expert has suggested where we should go this year and it’s a little underrated island in Croatia. Joanne Lynn, a Travel Expert at Riviera Travel, described Croatia as a versatile holiday destination because of the range of things to do and see. Popular spots in the Mediterranean country include Dubrovnik and Split, but there is much more to the country that few Brits have had the pleasure of experiencing, such as the small island of Mljet.

Mljet is located close to the Dubrovnik coast and boasts a wide range of things to do, but the standouts here include the beaches and the forested areas, making it a dream holiday destination for nature lovers. “This Croatian spot is perfect for nature lovers or those looking to spend more time surrounded by refreshing greenery,” Lynn said.

“Mljet is often described as Croatia’s greenest island, thanks to its dense pine forests and stunning national park.

“Over a third of the island is protected as Mljet National Park, home to two saltwater lakes and the 12th Century Benedictine Monastery on St Mary’s Island. Visit Mljet for a relaxing getaway and to experience nature’s true beauty.”

She added: “Kayaking or cycling around the lakes is the best way to soak in the tranquillity of this untouched paradise. Discover the beauty of Mlljet with our Split to Dubrovnik Yacht Cruise with Dalmatia & Plitvice Lakes.”

The island is home to Mljet National Park which tourists have described as “breathtakingly beautiful”. One Tripadvisor reviewer  wrote: “It is a beautiful place to visit, although we were only there for the day. It has a lovely walking or biking path and there is a ferry trip that takes you across the lake to the monastery that’s included with your park entrance fee.”

Another shared: “A beautiful tranquil island well worth a visit. If you’re a lover of swimming, nature, hiking and great scenery you’ll love it.”

Other attractions on the island include Odysseus Cave and Blato Village. One of the port towns on the island, Polače, is home to some of the best restaurants.

Meanwhile, near-by Pomena is also a lovely town while on the other end of the island, you have places like Saplunara.

To get to Mljet, you will fly into Dubrovnik from the UK and ferry rides can be booked independently or as part of an excursion.
