Brits have been urged to avoiud putting one thing in their fridge in a bid to reduce their energy costs are set to increase from April 1. Reducing the energy consumption of your fridge and freezer is one of the best ways to take money off your monthly bills and there are a few hacks to make your appliance run for less.

Fridges and freezers are some of the household necessities that require the most energy to use. However, an expert has shared her tips on how to make our fridges run more efficiently as bills increase in April. Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at Beko UK, provided advice, including tips that we didn’t know about before. One of those is regarding what we put into our fridge and how that can add onto the costs we incur.

According to the expert, we should avoid putting plastic containers in our fridge.

Plastic lunch boxes and containers are commonly found in UK fridges, either holding leftovers or prepped meals for the days ahead. But Sun says that we should swap it out for something else.

The expert recommends using glass containers instead of plastic ones. Although these containers can be more expensive to buy, they can help you save money on your energy bills down the line.

Sun said: “Using glass containers rather than plastic ones helps maintain stable temperatures, as glass better absorbs and retains cold.”

Essentially, placing glass instead of plastic into your fridge can make temperature control easier. Fridges are controlled by a thermostat that maintains the temperature.

The ideal temperature, Sun says, is between 3C and 5C. To help your fridge run efficiantly, there are other things to be aware of.

Sun explained: “Always let food cool to room temperature first. While many worry about food safety, this practice is perfectly safe and will prevent your fridge from experiencing temperature spikes that increase energy consumption and put the appliance under strain.”

She adds: “Always cover food and liquids as uncovered items can put unnecessary strain on your fridge’s compressor and increase moisture levels, making it harder for the appliance to maintain consistent temperatures.”
