‘Entitled neighbour kept stealing my Wi-Fi – but my revenge stopped it’

A man has been praised for his revenge on an ‘entitled’ neighbour who kept stealing his Wi-Fi to upload her X-rated videos on to the internet. He explained how he moved into an apartment while his home was being renovated – and noticed his Wi-Fi speed slowing down at certain times of the day.

After contacting his service provider about the issue, he came to learn a neighbour was using his Wi-Fi without his permission. Taking to Reddit, he said: “I noticed my video and download speeds had been reduced to a crawl, and that my ping time was in the low to mid triple-digit range. Several calls and a single service visit later, I found out that at least one of my neighbours had tapped into my WiFi.

“I changed the name of my router to BADGE357 and changed the password to a randomised character string of maximum length. My net speed went back to normal, and my ping time came back down to the low to mid double-digit range.” When visiting the main office to pay his rent soon after, he was approached by one of his neighbours who started to tell him about the “cops shutting down her internet connection”.

When I asked what made her think that, she said that the cop had posted his badge number. When I asked why they would shut her down, she said she was running an adult webcam service – completely legal, but somewhat explicit. What someone does to make money is no concern of mine, as long as they do not steal from me in the process.

“I told her that my service was just fine, so she started the whole bat-the-eyes and wiggle-the-tush routine and suggested in a real sweet, seductive voice that I could allow her to tap into my service in exchange for favours (nudge-nudge, wink-wink, say-no-more!).’Sure,’ I said. ‘My router is BADGE357, and my password is…’

It was at this point when the penny dropped and she started shouting at him for “ruining her business”. Happy to have taught her a lesson, he walked away with a smile on his face.

He added: “I think she eventually got her own service, because I never heard from her again, although the cold, icy looks she gave me as we passed in the parking lot were somewhat amusing.” Commenting on his post, one user said: “That’s good. You really had her going thinking you were going to give her free Wi-Fi.”

Another user added: “If she’s any good at what she does she can earn the monthly cable bill in ten minutes. No need to steal it.” A third user said: “She wasn’t stealing anything. You were offering free service to the neighbourhood by leaving it wide open.”
