Energy bills will be ‘significantly’ lower with 4 hacks

Energy prices continue to rise in 2025, which means households are continuously searching for practical ways to reduce their electricity bills. A couple of ways to reduce energy bills include stacking the dishwasher correctly and filling the washing machine.

By adopting new habits experts recommend you could “significantly” reduce your laundry-related bills, according to Grant Store. This includes adjusting the temperature of your washing cycle, loading the machine correctly, and using the right amount of detergent. The experts said: “Many modern detergents work effectively even at cold or warm temperatures.

“For everyday laundry, cold washes can remove stains and bacteria just as well as hot water, while saving a considerable amount of energy. However, it’s advisable to use warmer settings when washing items like bedding and towels to ensure they are properly cleaned.”

When loading the machine, it’s extremely important not to overload it, as this can make it less effective because clothes won’t move enough to be properly cleaned.

This means the machine works harder and longer, which uses more electricity. The experts noted: “On the other hand, washing very small loads is inefficient, as it uses almost the same amount of water and energy as a full load.

“As a golden rule, leave at least the width of one hand’s space at the top of the drum. This allows enough room for clothes to move and spin freely, resulting in a better wash and lower energy use.”

When putting in the detergent, make sure you’re using the correct amount of detergent, not too much or too little. Too much detergent causes extra rinse cycles to remove residue, as well as uses more water and energy.

Sticking to the recommended amount saves money on detergent as well as reduces utility bills. Detergent pods are a good option for convenience and accuracy as they contain the perfect amount for each load.

If you can pick eco settings on your washing machine and wash clothing during off-peak hours, then it’s advisable.

The experts said: “Eco settings are ideal if you have the time, as they adjust the amount of water and heat used based on the size and weight of your load, often using lower temperatures and gentler washing motions. While these cycles take longer, they use significantly less electricity overall.”

Another smart move is to run your machine during off-peak hours, which tend to be between 10pm and 6am, when rates are lower.

The experts added: “Waiting until you have a full load before washing maximises efficiency. Running machines half-empty or during peak hours unnecessarily increases your bills.”

4 washing machine hacks

  1. Using the right amount of detergent
  2. Don’t overload the washing machine
  3. Use the eco-setting and wash during off-peak hours
  4. Wait till you have a full load of washing
