Freeview continues to dominate when it comes to watching TV for free, with millions tuning in via this service every day. It’s not hard to see why Freeview is so popular, with users not being asked to stump up a monthly fee while still getting access to a vast number of live and on-demand channels.
Although this platform still tops the charts, it does face a relatively new rival that’s getting bigger by the month.
Freely, which is actually owned by the same team as Freeview, launched last year and offers simple access to content via a broadband connection. It’s a bit like Sky’s Glass TV with shows, sports and movies beamed to the screen without needing a dish or ugly aerial screwed into the chimney.
Users can also pause live TV, get full content recommendations and see what’s on now and next via a main and mini TV guide.
The only issue when switching to Freely is that you need a compatible TV but finding one is getting easier. At launch, there was just a handful of screens with Freely built in, but things have been changing at a rapid pace.
More and more manufacturers – including Toshiba, Hisense, Panasonic and Sharp – have joined the Freely party and now there’s another tech firm to add to the list.
The team at Metz have just confirmed their own range of Freely-powered TVs that all feature QLED screens, Dolby Atmos and full smart functionality with easy access to apps such as Netflix, Disney+ and iPlayer.
METZ Eye Care technology also features which helps to reduce to strain during long boxset binges.
The range includes a 65-inch model (£659), 55-inch (£489) and a 50-inch (£429) with all of the screens going on sale at Euronics stores across the UK.
Those wanting something smaller will also be able to pick up a 43-inch version from April – it will cost £379.
Speaking about the launch, Rob Peacock from METZ UK said: “As one of the longest-established consumer electronics manufacturers and TV producers in Europe, we pride ourselves on delivering premium design and outstanding technology, all packaged at an affordable price.
“We have now taken the decision to offer a five-year warranty on these models, to demonstrate how much confidence we have in the quality of our products.”
