DVLA issues urgent warning to drivers over major rule change that came in two weeks ago

The DVLA has issued an urgent warning to drivers planning to hit the road abroad this summer. The Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency reminded them to familiarise themselves with the new regulations following a major shift in permit law.

Motorists were urged to be aware of the changes following a rule change on April 1. Drivers can now obtain necessary documents from participating PayPoint stores.

In a post on Twitter, the DVLA reminded drivers: “Travelling abroad this summer and planning to drive? Don’t forget, how you get an international driving permit has changed! Since April 1, 2024, IDPs are exclusively available from participating PayPoint stores across the UK.”

A representative from Swansea Motor Group commented: “The recent changes announced by the DVLA are more than procedural; they are about ensuring that drivers have easy access to the necessary permits for safe and legal driving abroad.

“While the move to PayPoint outlets for IDP distribution is a significant change, it is also a reminder of the importance of staying informed about driving regulations, both domestically and internationally. As drivers adapt to this new system, they should remain vigilant about the requirements and ensure they are fully compliant before travelling.”

British motorists with an eye on international adventures this summer are being urged to secure an International Driving Permit (IDP) if they’re heading to a destination that mandates it. An estimated 140 nations either recommend or enforce the use of IDPs, with holiday hotspots such as Australia, Canada, Mexico, and Turkey among those on the list, reports the Mirror.

However, European neighbours like France and Spain don’t require them. The full directory of countries where an IDP is necessary can be found on the official government website.

For those unsure about which IDP they might need, PayPoint has offered some clarity, noting on its website: “IDPs support a British or Northern Irish licence in countries where photographic proof of ID is needed, or where your licence alone may not be enough. There are 3 types of IDPs, and the right one for you depends on the country or countries you wish to drive in.”
