Driving home for Christmas – study discovers favourite festive driving song

The specialist insurance company InsureMy has revealed UK motorist’s picks for the best Christmas songs to drive to.

According to a survey of 2,000 drivers across the UK, the best Christmas song to listen to behind the wheel is Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, which received 15.5 percent of votes.

Stewart Barnett, motoring expert at InsureMy, noted that the older Christmas songs are generally the most respected by motorists.

He said: “While there are a couple of Christmas songs that divide opinion, the country is pretty unanimous that the ‘oldies are the goodies’.

“Three of the top ten are 50 years old, five are 40 or nearing 40, and they are still preserved and enjoyed across the generations – 18- to 24-year-olds chose Wham! as their favourite.”

However, whilst The Pogue’s topped the list overall, InsureMy noted that the best Christmas song to drive to can vary heavily on the kind of car the motorist uses.

For instance, the company noted that Chris Rea’s Driving Home for Christmas was the festive song of choice for SUV owners, whilst those in off-roaders prefer Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano.

Additionally, van drivers, who perhaps spend the most time behind the wheel over the Christmas period, enjoy hearing the Andy Williams classic It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.

Nevertheless, the study found that almost all motorists have strong opinions on the Christmas songs they hate to hear when they are behind the wheel.

Overall, InsureMy found that All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey was the least-liked Christmas driving song, receiving 5.7 percent of the overall vote.

Other disliked festive driving songs found in the study included Mistletoe by Justin Bieber, Sam Smith’s rendition of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney.
