Drivers urged to check for animals under car to prevent ‘serious injury or fatalities’

Whilst drivers often admit to feeling more rushed in the mornings during winter, having to de-ice the windows, the company noted that a 10-second check could save an animal’s life.

In particular, LeaseCar.uk noted that small animals, such as cats, squirrels and hedgehogs, tend to hide underneath the engine.

Whilst this is often the warmest part of the car’s exterior, animals hiding underneath as the vehicle is started are at risk of getting hit by components such as the fan blades.

Tim recommended that motorists try to prevent animals from getting underneath the vehicle from getting rid of any nearby rubbish.

He continued: “Tips to prevent cats and hedgehogs from using the vehicle as a shelter include parking in a garage and ensuring it is clean as rubbish will attract animals.

“Failing to deter animals before starting the engine could not only lead to serious injury or fatalities but may also lead to a hefty bill at the garage.

LeaseCar.uk also advised that motorists can sprinkle herbs such as rosemary and lavender around and underneath the car, as many animals dislike the smell.

They also suggested that drivers should park nearby a motion activated light or set up a movement-based alarm system in their car.

Both features can help to startle and scare off the animals before they can get underneath the vehicle, preventing them from coming back to the space.
