Drivers urged to be prepared for breakdowns as 34 percent uncomfortable driving at night

The AA has forecast that December 23 is expected to be the busiest time on the UK roads, despite having just eight hours of daylight.

According to what3words, 40 percent of drivers who are uncomfortable when travelling in the dark state their fear is due to a lack of street lighting.

The survey also found that 53 percent of motorists are also concerned about driving during snowy and icy conditions.

Helen Smith, Dispatch Team Leader at the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, urged drivers planning to travel during cold conditions to take their time.

She advised: “We get called to many road traffic collisions when driving conditions are difficult due to bad weather so we would urge motorists to stick to the speed limits and adjust their driving according to the conditions.

“We would also encourage everyone to download the what3words app, so they are prepared in the unfortunate event of coming across, or being involved in, an accident. When we receive a 999 call it’s vital that we can identify the location quickly so we can send help where it’s needed fast.”
