Drivers can buy Mercedes E-Class for £1,800 as used luxury car values plummet at auction

An automotive YouTuber has shared one of the best locations to find really affordable used cars, stating that drivers should not be intimidated by them.

Lee runs the YouTube channel Car UK, in which he shows viewers how they can get their hands on used cars at auction for thousands less than they would cost at dealerships.

In a popular video, Lee recommends that motorists looking for a modern prestige model should go to auctions, noting that most people who visit are traders who are more interested in smaller models.

He explained: “If you haven’t worked it out already, cheap is where it’s at right now on the sale floors. The traders are looking to buy cheap stuff, and a lot of this deer tackle they’re not really interested in.

“I saw today some Jaguars, Land Rovers, Mercedes-Benz, even some general everyday stuff really struggling to get over the [reserve] cap. Really, anything over the £5,000 mark at the moment is just not getting anywhere near its book [average retail] price.”

To highlight his point, Lee takes a look around a 2017 Jaguar F-Pace R-Sport, a crossover that typically retails for £14,600 at dealerships but sold at the auction for just £9,800.

He added: “Here’s a big Jag, and this has surprised me. Look at the [reserve] cap on this. It surprised me, I thought it would have been a lot more than that.

“This is showing how prices are coming down. It has done 98,000 [miles] and it’s on a 17 plate, but honestly, these were big money this time last year, big money. You could have put [another] £5,000 easily on that price.”

However, Lee stated that used car buyers looking for a real bargain could have bought a 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class at the auction for just £1,800.

He continued: “Look at this here, a big Merc, the E-Class. It’s got problems, it’s done 144,000 miles. The 220D [diesel] is a good engine, a little agricultural and doesn’t sound the best, but is generally quite reliable.

“Generally, they can do hundreds of thousands of miles. The 220 is the [E-Class] you’re going to come across the most and I wouldn’t not buy one, they’re a good diesel engine, and this is a quite nice thing.”
