Drivers can avoid £5,000 repair bill this winter with this simple washing trick

Whilst almost all modern cars are effectively rustproofed, Select Car Leasing warned drivers of older vehicles and specialist luxury or sports cars to make sure dirt is regularly washed after driving in cold weather.

The company also noted that all vehicles with damage to the paintwork, such as scratches, chips, and dents, could be at risk of rust damage from grit.

The cost of repairing rust damage can vary, depending on where it is, however a full respray typically costs £5,000.

Graham recommended that motorists could avoid costly repair bills by washing their vehicle regularly before rust can form.

He advised: “I’d recommend maintaining a rigorous cleaning regime throughout winter, to make sure salt isn’t left to wreak its havoc.

“Rinse off road detritus as often as you can, paying attention to the underside of your vehicle, which might typically go unwashed.”

In particular, Select Car Leasing recommended that motorists wash their car using a pressure washer, which can quickly get rid of road salt from the underside.

However, the company also noted that avoiding puddles and flooded areas during the winter can help prevent salt water from getting onto the bodywork.

Finally, they noted that any damage to the paintwork should be repaired as soon as possible to avoid surface rust appearing.
