Dr Michael Mosley recommends five foods to keep in the freezer – can make them healthier

Dr Michael Mosley has revealed you can stay healthy even when you shop from the freezer section. In fact, the health guru shared that some foods can increase their nutritional value when they’re frozen.

Taking to thefast800 blog, he penned: “Balanced, nutritious, whole foods can be just as affordable and just as convenient as fast food or ultra-processed food if you know where to look.”

While the freezer section is often associated with quick fixes without much nutritional value, you could also find an array of healthy fruits and veggies. Dr Mosley said: “In fact, studies have found that the processes involved in commercial freezing increase the nutritional value of some vegetables.”

He explained that products like meat and veg are frozen at the height of their freshness, usually within hours of being picked or farmed. “You know you’re getting foods that are at their peak of nutrition and flavour,” the doctor added.

What’s more, you could also save some time and money when opting for frozen, as these products are often pre-prepared and cheaper. Dr Mosley added that it could also reduce waste.

With this in mind, he recommended keeping cauliflower rice, discounted meats, ginger, dairy and spinach in the freezer. Dr Mosley said ginger was much easier to use and prepare from frozen, while milk and yoghurt could be frozen so you always have some at the ready.

He also recommended freezing coconut milk and storing it in ice cube trays so it could be added into a curry, scrambled eggs or smoothies when you don’t need a full tin. He said spinach could be used in a similar way, adding that “frozen spinach has four times the amount of nutrients than fresh spinach, including vitamin C, calcium and iron”.

Dr Mosley also recommended storing homemade soup in sealed freezer bags to “help cram into spare corners, or flatten to take up less space than Tupperware”.

The doctor concluded: “Often, healthy food has a reputation for being expensive. However, that’s not always the case: healthy frozen food can be an excellent way to save you some pennies. But is frozen food healthy? Yes, it absolutely can be.”
