A warning has been issued to dog owners who travel in the car with their four-legged companion. Data shows that over half of UK dog owners travel with their pets with a third carrying out six or more journeys this year.

However, they could be at risk of a hefty £5,000 fine for not following strict rules. Drivers also face points on their licence for letting their dog hang their head out the window on a hot day.

According to experts at driver insurance company Zego, motorists must make sure their dogs are properly restrained. Rule 57 of the Highway Code says drivers must restrain their pets to prevent distractions and injuries, including the use of pet seatbelts, crates, carriers and harnesses.

Those who fail to properly restrain their dog can be fined up to £5,000. They also face points on their license and insurance issues as the offence falls under careless driving.

According to Zego, the most common example of drivers breaking the rule is by letting their dog sit in the front seat without being restrained. Others may also wrongly carry their pet on their lap during a journey.

Drivers also face large fines for leaving their dog in their car if it could cause them harm. This includes during extreme summer heat.

While there is no specific law that states it’s illegal to leave a dog in a car, the Animal Welfare Act 2006 makes it illegal to mistreat animals. Motorists who neglect their pet face a maximum penalty of imprisonment for a term not exceeding 51 weeks or a fine up to £5,000, or both.

There are also certain rules around taking pets on public transport. Breaking the rules could lead to fines of up to £1,000.

National Rail allows customers to bring two pets on the train with them. However, there are certain rules, including pets not being allowed into buffet cars or on the seats.

All dogs on National Rail trains must also be kept on a lead at all times. They should also be carried on escalators at stations.

Meanwhile, Transport for London (TfL) allows dogs to travel on buses, Tube, trams, DLR, London Overground and Elizbabeth services. However, they must be under control and kept on a lead.

Like National Rail, TfL also does not allow pets to sit on seats. All pet owners must also use the wide gates at stations to avoid congestion and delays.
