Pet owners have been issued a warning after cases of dogs in the UK becoming ill have been linked to dry jerky-type treats. Dogs that have fallen ill from consuming the treats have suffered from a kidney condition known as Fanconi syndrome. The rare disorder causes the proximal tubules of the kidneys to not properly reabsorb essential substances such as glucose, amino acids, phosphate, and bicarbonate.

According to animal charity Blue Cross, the treats originated from China in most cases. However, the cause remains unknown. The Veterinary Poisons Information Service is currently investigating and monitoring the situation.

The condition has been linked to various brands of jerky treats, including duck and sweet potato, and other products where chicken or duck jerky is wrapped around dried fruits or sweet potatoes. However, it is mainly chicken products that are connected to the illnesses.

There have also been reported cases in the US, Canada, and Australia over the past two years, in which even a small number of cats have fallen ill from the jerky-style treats.

Blue Cross said: “Dog owners are advised to take great care when buying food products for their pets online and to ensure they only purchase treats from reputable websites adhering to UK rules regulations. Be aware that not all products will list the country of origin for each ingredient used.”

The charity listed symptoms that pet owners should look out for after eating a treat. The things to look out for include a decreased appetite, lack of energy, vomiting, diarrhoea and increased drinking or urination.

If your dog experiences any of symptons, then you should immediately contact your vet for advice.

Blue Cross added: “Your vet will examine your pet and perform tests in order to establish a cause of your pet’s illness and determine the best course of treatment. Always take along the packing of the treat, where possible.”
