Life can be very busy at times, so it’s understandable that housework isn’t always a top priority. However, if you’re guilty of leaving clutter to build up around your home, this could be more dangerous than you think.

Having your belongings scattered around the house is something that most people wouldn’t think twice about. But health experts have now issued a stark warning that this seemingly harmless clutter could create a ‘breeding ground’ for mould, bacteria and allergens. Dr Babak Ashrafi from Superdrug Online Doctor has sounded the alarm, urging Brits to sort out their clutter sooner rather than later.

He said: “Those piles of belongings collecting dust aren’t harmless; they’re a breeding ground for allergens like pet dander and dust mites, which can trigger sneezing, itchy eyes, and even asthma attacks.

“But it’s not just dust you need to worry about. Cluttered areas, especially in damp rooms like bathrooms or kitchens, can harbour mould, which releases spores into the air. Breathing in these spores can aggravate respiratory conditions, causing persistent coughing, wheezing, and even lung infections in people with weakened immune systems.”

Bacteria could also become much more of a problem in a cluttered space. This is because you’re less likely to wipe surfaces down if there’s too much mess in a space, which allows germs to linger and multiply.

Dr Babak added: “This is particularly concerning in the kitchen, where cross-contamination from neglected surfaces can increase the risk of foodborne illnesses.”

It’s not just your physical health that can take a toll when your home is too cluttered. The doctor warned that a messy space can spell disaster for your mental wellbeing.

He said: “Studies suggest that clutter can increase stress and anxiety, making it harder to concentrate, relax, and even sleep. A tidy home isn’t just about appearances; it’s about creating a healthier, calmer, and more comfortable environment.”

If you’re faced with a lot of clutter at home and don’t know where to start in terms of clearing it, Tristan Lynch, CEO at Roseland Furniture, has suggested some simple solutions that you can use to sort the problem fast.

He said: “Choosing the right wardrobes, bedroom furniture, and other storage solutions will help keep your bedroom clutter free. Likewise, kitchen larders, sideboards, and cupboards can help keep items from spilling onto countertops or surfaces.

“If you find your hallway is becoming jumbled with clutter, a hallway sideboard or cupboard can also help to manage any clutter. A shoe cupboard is a simple way to keep footwear neat and tidy, or a storage bench provides a handy home for shoes as well as a convenient place to perch whilst you put them on.”
