Ditch white vinegar for item that’s ‘much more effective’ at removing kettle limescale

Limescale can build up in so many places around the homes, but it accumulates quicker in kettles.

Those living in a hard water area will notice that limescale builds up in the appliance far quicker as their water contains large amounts of calcium and magnesium.

Although very harmless to consume, having floating flakes of limescale swimming around your tea can leave a slightly bitter aftertaste.

One way that is a go-to for many when removing limescale is to use white vinegar.

White vinegar is fantastic when tackling limescale on a range of surfaces, however, when it comes to kettles it may not be the most effective.

According to Jenessa, who regularly shared cleaning tips and tricks on her TikTok account @byjaded, citric acid works better than white vinegar.

In a video she said: “Stop using white vinegar to remove limescale from your kettle and try citric acid instead.

“I don’t know about you but when I use vinegar, I always end up dumping out the first batch and filling up the kettle with water, boiling it again, and repeating until the vinegar smell is totally gone.

“With the citric acid method, I found it easily removed every bit of limescale and didn’t leave behind any scent or flavour once I dumped out the citric acid water and it was ready to go.

“Since I was able to eliminate the rinse cycles this is the more eco-friendly alternative since I can save on water and energy usage.

“Using citric acid to remove limescale from my kettle was so easy and effective. This will be my go-to method going forward.”

To use citric acid to descale your kettle, Jenessa recommends adding one tablespoon of citric acid, filling half the kettle with water and then putting it on to boil.

The citric acid water should be left to sit for at least one hour, however, results can often appear instantly.

Jenessa showed the before results at the beginning of the video and the kettle was covered in limescale, however, after using citric acid it was spotless.

Taking to the comments section, fellow TikTok users shared their thoughts on this. @alkin23 wrote: “Did this today, worked perfectly. Thank you.”
