Did ‘Bluey’s mom smoke weed? Kids show creators address fan theories on Chilli’s sordid past

By now you would’ve heard all about the theory that Chilli and Bandit are members of an underground crime ring thanks to their occupations – believe it or not.

Now, die-hard fans of the cartoon are further convinced Bluey’s mom Chilli isn’t as innocent as we all think she is – and it’s all thanks to a throwaway line heard in the 28-minute special episode, ‘The Sign’.

Chilli’s cheeky line is biggest clue about her past

In the special extended episode, Frisky runs off to the neighborhood lookout after having a disagreement with hubby-to-be, Rad.

Chilli jumps in the car with Bluey, Bingo, Muffin and Socks in a bid to convince Frisky to come back home and sort things out with her groom.

During their car manhunt, the girls end up at the lookout where Chilli is convinced she will find her long-time pal.

“This is the lookout. Frisky and I used to come up here as teenagers too, um, think…” she tells Bluey before trailing off.

And trailing off with her were the fans, who not only picked up on the line but were convinced they knew what the girls got up to when they were younger.

What did Chilli and Frisky get up to?

Fans have been pushing around their wild theories in groups online.

“OK was Chilli a stoner? ‘Come here to, um, think’,” a fan wrote in the Bluey Adult Fans Facebook group.

And it got many talking about what Chilli and Frisky were likely getting up to. Smooch boys, drink alcohol, or smoke weed being the three most popular options.

“I thought she was going to say make out, because normally that’s what happens at lookouts,” one fan answered the question.

“Yeeeeeah it was definitely about making out (or more),” another fan added.

And another giggled: “I think it was to “spend time” with Bandit, if you know what I mean.”

Meanwhile, others were thinking Chilli was being a bit naughtier than some thought.

“Pretty sure this was where she and Frisky would gather with a bunch of other teens to do the good old underage drinking thing,” a fan chimed in.

“I was thinking drinking,” another agreed.

And then came the fans who were convinced it wasn’t alcohol that was Chilli’s substance of choice – just like the original poster hinted.

“I literally said ‘oooo they came here to smoke,’” a fan laughed.

Some fans think the nod was to drinking, where others believe the teens may have been smoking. Disney+

“Chili was 100% a raver. Her dance moves and electronic music choices definitely scream glow sticks and clubbing,” another agreed.

Other fans insisted whatever you think Chilli and Frisky were doing up at the lookout says more about your own teen years than theirs.

“I was also thinking smoke weed. But I feel like I’m just relating. I feel it could be interpreted as drinking, sex or drugs. Whatever you can relate to,” someone said.

“I caught that too. Just one of the excellent lines the writers included so we could use our imagination about what she was actually going to say,” another added.

Bluey creator confirms the truth about the line

According to Bluey creator, Joe Brumm, fans are not wrong in thinking Chilli was getting up to no good at that lookout with Frisky.

During a segment in the Gotta Be Done podcast, Joe confirmed that Chilli’s line about going up to the lookout to “think” was a cheeky reference to drinking alcohol.

Joe confirms that the line is making reference to another heard in The Simpsons where Homer takes some time out to “think” and Bart remarks “I’m sure he meant to say serious drinking.”

AH, them cheeky teen pups!
