Whether we’re spreading them on toast or using them to make guacamole for a delicious dip to accompany nachos, avocados are a staple of a healthy diet, offering a range of health benefits. All too often though we are left frustrated because we have to throw them away before we have had the oppurtunity to enjoy them fully.
Due to a series of complex chemical reactions, once cut and exposed to oxygen, avocados are on a ticking timer as they gradually start to develop a brown colour across the green inside of the fruit.
Once the browning process is complete the avocados undergo a significant change in taste and texture, but there are some processes that have been known to help slow the process down.
While a number of hacks and tips have been suggested to help keep them green and ready to eat, the YouTube channel EatWithEvidence has suggested that one method stands out from the rest.
In one of her latest videos, the vlogger explained how one of the main ways we can prolong their lives is by restricting the amount of exposure the cut surface of the avocado gets to the oxygen around it: “By putting the avocado underwater, you create a physical barrier so no air can touch the flesh, oxygen, no browning.”
After leaving it floating in a tightly sealed container of water, with the fruit facing down, she then placed it in the fridge for 24 hours before seeing her results.
After a day had passed, she was hugely impressed with the results, with the inside of the fruit maintaining its light green complexion apart from a few minor spots of browning.
Importantly, she also observed how the texture of the fruit had stayed more or less unchanged, saying that while it was “just a tiny bit softer”, it was “barely noticeable”.
Speaking about her final results, the YouTuber claimed that the method was “flawless”: “If you want to keep your avocado halves looking absolutely flawless, then the water bath is your new secret weapon. It’s easy, it works and it keeps that beautiful colour perfectly.”
Another preservation method which she has also highlighted as successful is rubbing the cut avodcado halves with lime juice, but as her results showed, it is nowhere near as affective as the water bath method.
Meanwhile, there are also a number of health benefits to adding the delicious fruit to our diets, with Healthline writing:”Eating avocados regularly may benefit health in several ways, including protecting against heart disease, improving overall diet quality, improving satiety, and promoting gut health.”
Avocados have a significant amount of fiber, B6, vitamin C, potassium, vitamin E, folate, and copper.
