Couple build fully-insulated luxury house for stray cat and he sleeps there every night

A couple built a fully-insulated luxury house for their neighbourhood stray cat and now he sleeps there every night.

Chris, 35, and Danica Gadeken, 31, first noticed the moggie about three years ago when he was just a kitten.

They lost sight of him for about a year before he reappeared last year, only this time much larger.

As winter approached in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, Chris and Danica became concerned for the cat, who they affectionately named Fat Billy.

As Fat Billy was too skittish to be officially adopted and welcomed into their home, they decided to build him a luxury house in their yard.

Danica, an interior designer (@nadine_stay), said: “In the winter last year we thought he may have been sleeping in the shed on our property as it doesn’t provide much warmth.”

“I said I want to get a plastic bin with straw to give him a nice place to sleep but Chris had the idea to build him his own real house!”

The couple had plenty of spare materials from various interior design projects, so Chris got to work assembling the house.

Chris, who works as a healthcare manager (@chris_gadeken) said: “At first I said he’ll be fine. He’s resilient.”

“But then I thought we have so much extra materials from other projects and it will be fun to do!

“I think we spent $4 (£3.16) on bale of hay so it basically cost us nothing. I help Danica a lot with her business and so building wasn’t completely new to me either.”

Chris and Danica packed the walls, ceiling and floor with insulation to make sure it was as warm as possible and even used cedar wood shingles to tile the roof.

It took Fat Billy a while, but soon enough, he was loving his new home.

Danica said: “It took a little while for him to go inside but he had been in the house a handful of times.

“He wasn’t staying overnight so we moved the house into the shed with a small heater next to the house. Then soon enough, we noticed the straw was matted down so we think he sleeps in there very frequently now. We even caught him taking another cat in there!”
