Cook's hack for the 'crispiest' roast chicken with absolutely no oil or butter required

Nothing beats a juicy roast chicken with a golden, crispy skin, but it can be hard to master without under, or overcooking the meat.

However, one avid cook claims to have solved this problem with their crafty kitchen hack.

The cook went viral on social media after sharing their method for making the “crispiest” roast chicken, as revealed in a video posted on their TikTok account.

Emily Claire Baird explained that the “three things” needed to master the art of golden roast chicken include a cast iron skillet, a tablespoon of kosher salt, and a chicken that weighs around 4lbs (1.8kg).

While demonstrating how she uses them, Emily told fellow TikTok users that it’s the “easiest” way to make the “crispiest roast chicken ever”.

The food enthusiast started by taking a large mixing bowl and placing the whole raw chicken inside.

She noted that it’s important to “pat the chicken dry” beforehand to ensure maximum crispiness once cooked.

She then covered the meat in the measured spoonful of kosher salt while lifting up the legs to ensure every inch of the skin was coated.

Next, she heated the skillet in a 245C oven (475F) until hot to the touch, then carefully removed it and placed the whole chicken inside.

As explained by Emily, this cooking method requires absolutely no oil or butter while cooking the meat, so it’s ideal for those cutting down on added fats.

To cook the chicken, the TikTok star simply placed the iron skillet in the oven for one hour, noting that that’s really all there is to it.

Though it seems too good to be true, Emily claimed that following her three simple steps will result in the “crispiest chicken you have ever seen in your life”.

The end product was undeniably golden and sizzling in its jus, as the content creator pointed out: “As it rests, it will make its own pan gravy.”

While some TikTok users noted that lack of seasoning, Emily claimed that salt is all you need to “bring out the natural flavour of the chicken”.

Others praised the cooking method with one TikTok user commenting: “I made this last night. Perfect. Thank you.”
